Mediana (Serbia)

Weather…

Mediana is a prominent archaeological site on the outskirts of Niš, representing the luxurious suburban residence of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Established in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD, the complex served as a retreat for imperial visits and an administrative hub for the province of Dacia Mediterranea. The site covers approximately 40 hectares and includes the remains of a lavish palace with a peristyle, imperial baths, a granary (horreum), and a water tower (castellum aquae). Its most celebrated features are the extensive mosaic floors, spanning over 1,000 square meters, depicting intricate geometric patterns and mythological figures. Strategically located along the Via Militaris, Mediana connected the central Balkans with both Rome and Constantinople. The residence exemplifies late Roman architectural mastery, featuring advanced underfloor heating and sophisticated plumbing systems. Following its destruction by the Huns in 441 AD, the site was abandoned and partially reoccupied by Slavic tribes. Today, it stands as a key cultural heritage site showcasing Serbia's rich Roman legacy.
