Raska Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, commonly known as Petrova crkva, is located near Novi Pazar and is the oldest surviving Christian church in Serbia. It was built around the 9th century on the foundations of a late antique baptistery and served as the seat of the Bishopric of Ras. The architecture is distinctive for its circular floor plan with a central square area, showcasing early Byzantine design influences. Historically, the church is of immense importance as the place where Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty, was baptized and where early state assemblies were held. The interior contains layers of frescoes from the 9th, 10th, and 12th centuries, which are among the rarest examples of early medieval art in the Balkans. Recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Stari Ras and Sopoćani', the church is surrounded by a vast medieval necropolis. It continues to be an active place of worship and a premier destination for those exploring the origins of Serbian history and spirituality.
