Gishoma Peat Power Plant (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Gishoma Peat Power Plant in the Western Province is part of Rwanda's strategy to diversify its energy mix and utilize domestic resources. Commissioned in 2017, the 15 MW plant uses peat extracted from nearby swamps as fuel. Rwanda has significant peat reserves, and this project was the first to use them for industrial-scale electricity generation. However, the project has faced technical challenges and environmental concerns, as peat extraction can damage wetlands and burning peat releases CO2 emissions. Despite these challenges, the plant represents an important local energy source, reducing reliance on more expensive imported fuels. It has also created jobs in the region, both at the plant and in peat harvesting. The experience from Gishoma is informing the planning of future energy projects, with a greater focus on efficiency and environmental sustainability.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
This power plant utilizes local peat deposits to stabilize the Rwandan grid, providing a reliable source of thermal power. Alongside Gisagara, it forms part of Rwanda's strategy to harness domestic peat for electricity generation.
🚪
Visiting
As an operational industrial facility, public entry is not allowed. The plant can be viewed from the access road and nearby elevated areas, showing its cooling systems and turbine halls.
👀
Where to view it
A good viewpoint is from the road connecting Gishoma town to the plant, offering a frontal view of the facility. The flat terrain of the region allows for unobstructed views of the power station from several angles.
🧺
Local products
Like other power plants, it produces electricity for the national grid, not consumer goods. Peat is harvested from nearby bogs and delivered to the plant; travelers may see peat trucks on local roads.
📆
Active season
The plant operates continuously, but peat extraction is seasonal, typically during the dry months. This ensures a steady fuel supply for year-round electricity generation, with scheduled maintenance during off-peak periods.
Nearby
Visiting both Gishoma and Gisagara peat plants provides insight into Rwanda's energy sector. The surrounding area includes rural villages and agricultural fields, offering a contrast to industrial infrastructure.
