Bukavu

Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, is widely regarded as one of the most pretty cities in Central Africa. Perched on five peninsulas extending into the southern end of Lake Kivu, the city is separated from Rwanda by the Ruzizi River. Established in 1901 by Belgian colonial authorities as Costermansville, Bukavu became a favored retreat due to its temperate high-altitude climate. The nearby Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a major ecological attraction, being one of the few places where eastern lowland gorillas can be tracked. The local economy is driven by lake-based commerce, artisanal mining, and the processing of agricultural products like cinchona and coffee. Swahili is the primary language of communication, reflecting the city's integration into the East African cultural sphere. Bukavu continues to grow rapidly, with residential areas scaling the steep hillsides, creating a unique urban tapestry of beauty and struggle.
