Ulan-Ude, the colorful capital of the Republic of Buryatia, is located in the heart of eastern Siberia, picturesquely tucked away between forested mountains near Lake Baikal. The city is the spirited center of the Buryats, a Mongolic people, and the most important center of Buddhism in Russia. This profound Asian influence gives Ulan-Ude an unmistakable atmosphere, in which Russian Orthodox wooden churches harmonize with the curved roofs of the datsans (Buddhist monasteries). An absolute rarity and the most famous landmark of the city is the colossal, 42-ton Lenin head monument on the main square, the largest of its kind in the world. Due to its location on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the branching off of the Trans-Mongolian Railway, the city is also a flourishing transport hub between Russia, Mongolia, and China.
