Magnitogorsk, towering industrially on the banks of the Ural River, is the personified dream of Soviet heavy industrialization in the 1930s. The city was built from scratch at the foot of Mount Magnitnaya, whose unimaginably rich iron ore reserves were the deciding factor for this gigantic project under Joseph Stalin. Within a few years, thousands of workers, driven by ideological zeal, built the MMK (Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works), to this day one of the largest and most productive steel plants in the world. A geographical peculiarity gives Magnitogorsk a unique charm: the Ural River divides the city exactly into a European and an Asian half, which is marked by several bridges and monuments. Today, Magnitogorsk is not only a rugged steel city but also the home of a successful ice hockey team and, architecturally, a fascinating relic of monumental Stalinist urban planning.
