Olkhon is the largest island in Lake Baikal and is considered one of the holiest places in Northern Asia. The island's landmark is the Shaman Rock at Cape Burkhan near the main village of Khuzhir, a significant spiritual center for Buryat shamanism. Travelers seek out the island to experience its untouched nature, ranging from sandy bays to vast steppes and dense taiga forests. A trip to Cape Khoboy at the northern tip of the island provides spectacular views over the deepest part of the lake. The landscape is rugged and primordial, featuring wild horses and a deeply rooted local culture. Olkhon is the great place to feel the vastness and energy of Lake Baikal away from the crowds. Buryat cuisine, with its hearty 'pozy' (steamed meat dumplings), is a culinary highlight. The island is connected to the mainland by ferry, with the journey from Irkutsk taking about 5-6 hours. The best time to visit is mid-summer for camping or late winter (February/March) to explore the legendary blue ice caves.
