The Khan Khentii forest region is located in northeastern Mongolia and is part of the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, established in 1992. Covering over 1.2 million hectares, it represents the transition zone between the Siberian taiga and the Central Asian steppe. The landscape is characterized by dense larch and pine forests, pristine rivers, and rugged mountains, with Burkhan Khaldun being the most significant peak. This mountain is traditionally regarded as the birthplace and burial site of Genghis Khan and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is almost entirely uninhabited by humans, which has allowed for the preservation of its original biodiversity. It is home to brown bears, wolves, reindeer, and over 250 species of birds in a largely undisturbed environment. Beyond its spiritual significance, the forest serves as a vital watershed for the Onon, Kherlen, and Tuul rivers. Management of the area focuses heavily on protection against forest fires and illegal logging.
