Omsk, one of the most populous and historically fascinating metropolises in Siberia, is strategically located at the confluence of the Om River with the majestic Irtysh. Founded in 1716 as a robust border fortress of the Russian Empire, the city experienced its golden era in the 19th century as a flourishing commercial center and a key station on the Trans-Siberian Railway. A somber but famous facet of the city's history is its role as a place of exile; the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky spent several years in penal servitude here, an experience he chronicled in his work „The House of the Dead“. During the Russian Civil War, Omsk briefly served as the capital of anti-Bolshevik Russia under Admiral Kolchak.
