Tomsk, positioned in the dense forests of Siberia on the banks of the Tom River, is a true open-air museum of Russian wooden architecture and one of the oldest educational centers in the country. Founded in 1604 by order of Tsar Boris Godunov, the city still preserves streets lined with magnificently carved wooden houses, whose filigree decorations are known as „wooden lace“ and give the city an incomparable fairy-tale character. With the founding of the first Siberian university in 1878, Tomsk established itself as the intellectual center of the region and earned the reputation as the „Siberian Athens“. Today, tens of thousands of students shape the animated, youthful flair of this historic metropolis, which masterfully combines research and tradition.
