Barnaul, the capital of Altai Krai, is picturesquely situated on the Ob River and serves as the main gateway to the dramatic expanses of the Altai Mountains. Founded in 1730 by the industrial pioneer Akinfiy Demidov, the city flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries as one of the most important centers of silver smelting in the Russian Empire. This prosperous past is still reflected today in the elegant merchant houses and wooden architecture of the historical center, which earned the city the nickname „Siberian Athens“. Today, Barnaul is a spirited scientific and educational center as well as an industrial hub in southern West Siberia, offering a rich cultural scene with theaters, museums, and universities.
