Asralt Khairkhan, standing at an elevation of 2,799 meters, is the highest peak in the Khentii Mountains of central Mongolia. It is situated within the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, a region of immense historical and cultural significance as the presumed birthplace of Genghis Khan. Geologically, the mountain is primarily composed of Paleozoic granite and metamorphic rocks, with its rugged profile shaped by ancient glacial activity and freeze-thaw weathering. The slopes are blanketed in dense Siberian larch and pine forests, representing the southernmost fringe of the Eurasian taiga. The mountain serves as a vital watershed, giving rise to major rivers such as the Onon and the Kherlen, which eventually flow toward the Pacific basin. In Mongolian tradition, Asralt Khairkhan is considered a sacred site, and its slopes are home to various ritual cairns known as ovoos. Despite being the highest point in its range, its relative proximity to Ulaanbaatar makes it a frequent destination for trekkers, though extreme winter temperatures and high winds pose significant risks. The summit provides a panoramic view of the vast, untouched wilderness of the Khentii plateau.

Getting there

Approaching this highest peak of the Khentii Mountains is usually done from the Mongolian capital via unpaved tracks. A reliable four-wheel-drive vehicle is strictly necessary for the rough roads.

Best season

The brief Mongolian summer, roughly from July to August, provides the best conditions for an ascent. During the other months, plummeting temperatures and deep snow can make the effort extremely difficult.

The terrain ranges from forested foothills to steep, rocky ridge sections near the summit. This mountain is a demanding destination strictly for experienced mountaineers, not casual hikers.

A complete set of trekking and alpine equipment is indispensable. This includes thick sleeping bags, a robust tent, ample provisions, and GPS navigation devices for the pristine, trackless terrain.
