Kaliningrad, the historical Königsberg, is a city of unique geopolitical and cultural significance as a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, situated between Poland and Lithuania. For centuries, it was the intellectual and political center of East Prussia, immortally connected with the life and work of the great philosopher Immanuel Kant, whose tomb can still be found today next to the restored brick cathedral on Kneiphof Island. After the devastating destruction of World War II, the city was granted to the Soviet Union in 1946 and renamed after Mikhail Kalinin. Today, Kaliningrad presents itself as a fascinating architectural mix of preserved German fortifications, massive Soviet prefabricated buildings, and a modern European port city. The region is also the undisputed world center of amber extraction.
