Yekaterinburg, strategically located on the eastern flank of the Middle Ural Mountains, traditionally marks the geographical border between Europe and Asia. Founded in 1723 and named after Empress Catherine I, the city rapidly developed into the most important administrative and industrial center of the resource-rich Ural region. Yekaterinburg gained historical notoriety as the site of one of the darkest chapters in Russian history: it was here, in the Ipatiev House, that the last royal Romanov family was executed in 1918; today, the imposing Church on Blood stands on this spot. With its mix of historic industrial architecture, Soviet-era constructivist buildings, and modern business centers, the city reflects the dynamic development of Russia.
