Kemerovo, an industrial powerhouse on the banks of the Tom River, is the undisputed capital of the Kuznetsk Basin (Kuzbass), one of the largest coal-mining regions in the world. Originally evolving from several small villages, the city only officially received town status in 1918 and grew rapidly in parallel with the massive expansion of Soviet coal mining and the chemical industry. The legacy of mining is omnipresent in Kemerovo, from the fascinating Krasnaya Gorka Mining Museum, established in original tunnels, to the monument to the miner that towers over the city. Today, the industry-dominated metropolis is successfully striving for a green transformation, featuring extensive parks, modern sports facilities, and a bustling riverfront.
