Irkutsk, often affectionately referred to as the „Paris of Siberia“, is one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in the Russian Far East. Founded in 1661 as winter quarters on the Angara River, the city quickly developed, thanks to its strategic location, into a flourishing commercial center on the tea route between Russia, Mongolia, and China. A tragic but culturally enriching role was played by Irkutsk in the 19th century as a place of exile for the Decembrists, noble officers who were exiled here after a failed uprising and who left a lasting mark on the intellectual and cultural life of the city. Today, Irkutsk is the main gateway to majestic Lake Baikal and charms visitors with its ornately carved historical wooden houses, which stand in appealing contrast to the modern urban architecture.
