Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius (Russia)

Weather…

The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in Sergiyev Posad is the undisputed spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of Russia's most venerated pilgrimage sites. Founded in 1337 by the highly respected monk Sergius of Radonezh, the site began as a modest wooden cell in the dense forest, rapidly growing into a massive and wealthy monastery complex. In the 16th century, the monastery was enclosed by fortified walls over a kilometer long, which later famously withstood a 16-month Polish-Lithuanian siege in the early 17th century. The architectural highlight is the magnificent Assumption Cathedral with its star-studded blue domes and massive golden central dome, built by order of Ivan the Terrible. Inside the original Trinity Cathedral, the legendary icon painter Andrei Rublev created his famous masterpiece, the Icon of the Trinity, to honor the tomb of St. Sergius.
