Volgograd, the historical Tsaritsyn and world-famous Stalingrad, stretches as an almost endless urban ribbon for over 60 kilometers along the right bank of the lower Volga. The city entered world history forever through the relentless Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943), the most costly and decisive turning point of World War II. Completely rebuilt from the ruins of this apocalyptic conflict in the monumental style of Soviet classicism, Volgograd today is a vast open-air memorial of heroic resistance. The undisputed landmark of the city is Mamayev Kurgan hill, crowned by the colossal, sky-reaching statue „The Motherland Calls!“, which remains one of the tallest and most impressive sculptures in the world to this day.
