Saratov, which stretches majestically along the right bank of the middle Volga, is a commercial and university city with a long tradition and its own unique charm. Founded in 1590 as a fortress to protect the southeastern borders, the city flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries as the most important transit point for fish, salt, and grain, and became the cultural center of the region. Saratov gained special historical significance as the main settlement area of the Volga Germans, whose influence can still be felt in the architecture and culture of the region today. The city is also proud of its close connection to space exploration: the cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space, studied here and landed near Saratov after his historic flight, where a monument commemorates this event today.
