Central Russian Upland (Russia)

Weather…

The Central Russian Upland is an extensive, rolling hilly region that serves as the geological and hydrological backbone of European Russia. Stretching for over a thousand kilometers, the landscape is defined by gently swelling chalk and limestone hills, intensely dissected by a complex network of deeply incised river valleys and steep ravines locally known as 'balkas.' This elevated plateau acts as a critical watershed, birthing several of Eastern Europe's most historically and economically vital rivers, including the mighty Don, the Oka, and the Seym. The legendary, highly fertile chernozem (black earth) soils along its flanks have made the region the agricultural heartland of Russia for centuries, a status that has unfortunately resulted in widespread deforestation and severe soil erosion. Despite intense human modification, small, precious remnants of the original, highly biodiverse forest-steppe still endure within the protected, steep-sided valleys.
