Sign Cathedral Kursk (Russia)

Weather…

The Sign Cathedral in Kursk is a magnificent monument of Russian Neoclassicism and the spiritual heart of the Kursk Diocese. Built between 1815 and 1826, the cathedral was commissioned to celebrate Russia's victory over Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812. The structure is characterized by its massive blue dome, measuring 20 meters in diameter, and its imposing facades adorned with Corinthian columns. It was originally designed to house the famous Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, one of the oldest and most revered miraculous icons in the Orthodox world. During the Soviet period, the cathedral was secularized and functioned as a cinema, resulting in the near-total destruction of its original interior artistry. Following its return to the church in the 1990s, the cathedral underwent an extensive restoration process to return it to its former liturgical splendor. Today, it stands as a dominant landmark in central Kursk, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists who come to witness its architectural and spiritual significance.
