Jebel Shams
Jebel Shams is Oman's highest peak, reaching over 3,000 meters, and is for nature enthusiasts. Its main draw is the Wadi Ghul, a massive chasm often referred to as the 'Grand Canyon of Arabia.' The sheer rock faces drop over a thousand meters vertically, providing a sense of scale and beauty that is hard to match anywhere else in the region. The most popular trail is the 'Balcony Walk,' an ancient donkey path that hugs the canyon's rim and leads to the abandoned village of Sap Bani Khamis. Along the way, you can find hidden pools and waterfalls after a rare rainfall. The area is also famous for camping and stargazing, as the high altitude and lack of light pollution make for incredibly clear night skies. Part of the road to the top is unpaved, so a 4WD vehicle is highly recommended. The drive from Muscat takes about three hours. The best time for hiking is between October and March. In the winter months, temperatures can drop below freezing, and snow occasionally dusts the peak, creating a stark contrast to the warm desert below.
