Engure Lake Nature Park (Latvia)

Weather…

The Engure Lake Nature Park is located on the Courland coast of Latvia and is a vital protected area for Baltic Sea biodiversity. The park encompasses the shallow Lake Engure, which is separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, as well as adjacent forests and bogs covering 12,587 hectares. Historically, the area was known for traditional fishing, but since the establishment of the reserve in 1957, it has evolved into a center for ornithological research. The geography is characterized by lagoon lakes and dune landscapes, providing a good nesting ground for over 180 bird species. Particularly noteworthy is the grazing of coastal meadows by wild Konik horses and Latvian Blue cows, which help prevent the encroachment of scrub on rare orchid meadows. Botanists can find over 20 different orchid species here, flourishing in the calcareous fens and coastal meadows. The park is a significant part of the Natura 2000 network and plays a central role in protecting European migratory bird populations.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The nature park is typically approached from the coastal roads, with access points leading toward the lake basin. Many visitors start their journey at established bird-watching towers.
📅
Best season
Spring and early summer are spectacular for bird migration and the blooming of the large orchid meadows. Early autumn is also highly rewarding for observing flocks resting on the water.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The environment consists mostly of flat lake shores, wet meadows, and adjacent forest paths. Some areas can be quite marshy or waterlogged, particularly near the expansive reed beds.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof footwear or rubber boots are essential for exploring the wet meadows without getting soaked. Bring binoculars for bird watching and a camera to capture the diverse flora.
🅿️
Parking
Designated parking areas are usually available near the main entrances and adjacent to the coastal highway. It is advisable to park only in these marked zones to protect the delicate ecosystem.
⚠️
Safety
Be mindful of ticks in the tall grass and forest areas, making long trousers and repellent necessary. Stay on marked trails to avoid trampling the protected and highly sensitive orchid fields.
⏱️
Time needed
Most nature enthusiasts spend around three to five hours walking the trails and visiting the observation towers. Dedicated bird watchers often stay for the entire day with appropriate gear.
