Nizwa Fort (Oman)

Weather…

Nizwa Fort is Oman's most visited national monument and a masterpiece of 17th-century Omani military architecture. It was constructed in the 1650s by Imam Sultan bin Saif al-Ya'rubi following his successful expulsion of the Portuguese from the country. Its most distinctive feature is the massive circular tower, measuring 45 meters in diameter and 30 meters in height, with foundations rooted deep into the ground. The fortress served as both an administrative center and an impregnable stronghold, securing Nizwa's status as the capital of Oman at the time. Defensive mechanisms are ingenious, featuring trapdoors for pouring boiling oil, winding stairs designed to confuse attackers, and cannon embrasures that controlled the surrounding plains. Today, the fort houses a modern museum illustrating daily life in ancient Oman and the region's traditional craftsmanship. Located adjacent to the fort is the famous Nizwa Souq, renowned for its silverware and the traditional Friday morning livestock market.
