Jebel Shams (Oman)

Weather…

Jebel Shams, the 'Mountain of the Sun', is the highest peak in the Hajar Mountains and in all of Oman, reaching an altitude of about 3,009 meters. The mountain is most famous for the dramatic views of Wadi Ghul, often referred to as the 'Grand Canyon of Arabia'. The canyon plunges nearly 1,000 meters vertically in some places. There is a famous hiking trail, the 'Balcony Walk' (W6 path), which runs along the rim of the canyon, offering spectacular vistas. The trail leads to the abandoned village of As Sab. Temperatures on Jebel Shams are significantly cooler than in the rest of the country, and can even drop below freezing in winter. The area is popular for hiking, camping, and stargazing, due to the clear nights and minimal light pollution. There are several resorts and campsites near the summit for visitors.
