💡 Tips
- The abandoned mud-brick old town is a maze of narrow alleys, best explored on foot early in the morning.
- Always respect local privacy; avoid pointing your camera directly at residents or occupied homes.
- Walking alongside the ancient 'falaj' irrigation channels is a great way to stay cool under the date palms.
- Make it a full-day trip by driving up the mountain to the nearby scenic village of Misfat al Abriyeen.

Al Hamra, in the Ad Dakhiliyah region, is considered the best-preserved example of traditional Omani mud-brick architecture. The town of about 22,000 inhabitants is located at the foot of the 3,009-meter-high Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain, about 220 kilometers west of Muscat. The historic houses of Al Hamra date mostly from the 17th century, with some of the oldest even from the Yarubi period (1624-1744), before the founding of the Al-Bu-Said dynasty and thus the Sultanate of Oman. The Bait al-Safah living museum showcases traditional crafts such as bread baking, coffee roasting, and indigo dyeing. About 15 kilometers west is the mountain village of Misfah al-Abriyyin, also built of mud-brick, which is perched on a steep cliff. Al Hamra is the starting point for hikes to the Balcony Walk on Jebel Shams.
