Bahla Fort (Oman)

Weather…

Bahla Fort is one of the most imposing fortifications in Oman and was the first site in the country to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987. The fortress was constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries by the Banu Nebhan tribe, who made Bahla their capital and controlled the lucrative frankincense trade. The building is unique for its extensive use of unbaked mud bricks, requiring constant maintenance to survive the region's infrequent but heavy rainfall. The fort is surrounded by a massive 12-kilometer long defensive wall that once protected the entire oasis and its palm groves. Within the walls lie winding corridors, residential quarters, mosques, and wells, showcasing the sophisticated defensive architecture of the period. Bahla is also renowned as a center for pottery and for its folklore involving magic and spirits, adding a mystical layer to its historical significance. Following extensive restoration in the 1990s and 2000s, the complex is now open to the public, offering a deep dive into Oman's medieval history.
