Al Hajar Mountains (Oman)

Weather…

The Al Hajar Mountains stretch for over 500 kilometers across northern Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The range is divided into the Western and Eastern Hajar by the Sumail Valley. The mountains were formed during the Late Cretaceous period through the obduction of oceanic crust onto the Arabian Plate. They are home to unique flora and fauna, including the Arabian Tahr. The region is rich in ophiolites, which are sections of Earth's oceanic crust and upper mantle that have been uplifted and exposed, attracting geologists worldwide. Traditional agriculture in the mountain valleys is made possible by the Aflaj irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Terraced fields on the slopes testify to centuries of agricultural use.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The mountain region is best explored with a powerful four-wheel-drive vehicle, as many of the steep mountain passes and high villages are only accessible via gravel tracks.
📅
Best season
Visits to the mountains are most pleasant during the winter months from October to April, when daytime temperatures are much more moderate, facilitating outdoor exploration.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is dramatic and rugged, characterized by deep canyons, sheer rock walls, and barren plateaus that offer spectacular but physically demanding hiking routes.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with strong grip, plentiful water, sun protection, and warm layers for the surprisingly chilly evenings at high altitudes are strongly recommended.
🅿️
Parking
In the mountain villages or at the start of trailheads, there are usually basic parking options on unpaved ground, typically providing space for just a handful of vehicles.
⚠️
Safety
Drive extremely carefully on the steep, winding mountain roads and strictly avoid wadis (dry riverbeds) during any threat of rain due to the severe risk of flash floods.
⏱️
Time needed
To truly experience the dramatic landscape of the mountain range, visitors should plan to spend one to two days, especially if undertaking longer hikes or remote drives.
