Al Hoota Cave (Oman)

Weather…

Al Hoota Cave, located at the foot of Jebel Shams, is one of Oman's largest cave systems and the first to be developed for tourism. The cave is estimated to be over 2 million years old and stretches for 4.5 kilometers, of which about 500 meters are accessible to the public. Visitors are taken by an electric train from the visitor center to the cave entrance. Inside, an illuminated walkway guides them through the main chambers, revealing an impressive variety of stalactites and stalagmites. A special feature of the cave is its underground lake, which is home to a rare ecosystem, including a unique species of blind fish (Garra barreimiae). These fish have adapted to the perpetual darkness by losing their eyes and pigmentation. The constant temperature and humidity inside the cave create a unique environment. The visitor center includes a geological museum that explains the cave's formation and the region's geology.
