Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in Oman and served as the national capital during the 6th and 7th centuries. It is located in the Ad Dakhiliyah region at the base of the Western Hajar Mountains, approximately 140 kilometers from Muscat. The city is dominated by the Nizwa Fort, which was completed in 1668 by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Yarubi and features a massive circular tower with a diameter of 45 meters. Historically, Nizwa was a center for Islamic learning and trade, particularly for frankincense and silver. The city's souq remains one of the most important in the country, specializing in traditional Omani crafts and silver jewelry. Nizwa is also known for its extensive palm groves and the Falaj Daris, a UNESCO World Heritage site irrigation system that provides water to the local agriculture. Today, it remains a vital cultural and commercial hub in the interior of the Sultanate.
