Bahla, in the Ad Dakhiliyah region, is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bahla Fort, which was added to the list in 1987 as the first Omani site. The massive mud-brick complex dates from the 12th to 15th centuries and was built by the Banu Nabhan tribe, who made Bahla their capital. The town of about 60,000 inhabitants is surrounded by a 13-kilometer-long mud-brick wall known as Sur al-Bahla. Bahla has been the center of pottery in Oman for centuries: the reddish-brown clay pots from Bahla are made using traditional methods on a potter's wheel. In Omani folklore, Bahla is also known as the city of djinns, to whom many local legends are dedicated. It is located about 200 kilometers southwest of Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman.
