Jebel Akhdar
Jebel Akhdar, part of the Al Hajar Mountains, sits at an altitude of around 2,000 meters, providing a cool sanctuary from the desert heat. Its name, meaning 'Green Mountain,' comes from the fertile slopes where pomegranates, apricots, walnuts, and the famous Damask roses thrive thanks to the ancient Falaj irrigation system. In spring, the scent of blooming roses fills the air, creating a truly magical atmosphere. Hikers enjoy trails that wind through abandoned mountain villages and along dramatic cliff edges. Viewpoints like Diana’s Point (named after Princess Diana) offer sweeping panoramas over deep limestone canyons. The local culture is deeply tied to agriculture, and visitors can witness traditional methods of distilling rose water in local workshops. A 4WD vehicle is strictly required to pass the police checkpoint and navigate the steep, winding roads. The drive from Muscat takes about two and a half hours. The best time to visit is March and April for the rose season or late summer for the fruit harvest. Even in winter, the days are sunny, but temperatures can drop significantly at night.
