Suwayq is a coastal town in the South Al Batinah province with about 110,000 inhabitants, located about 130 kilometers northwest of Muscat. The city has been an important agricultural center of the Batinah Plain for centuries, considered the granary of the Sultanate of Oman. On the fertile soils, irrigated by Aflaj systems, grow dates, bananas, limes, mangoes, and vegetables. The 18th-century Suwayq Fort, with its four distinctive towers, is located directly on the beach and now houses a small museum. The long sandy beach stretches for several kilometers and is a nesting area for green sea turtles. The economy is traditionally based on fishing, agriculture, and more recently on industrial projects in the Sohar-Suwayq industrial zone.
