Carnikava is located north of Riga at the mouth of the Gauja, Latvia's longest river. The town is known nationwide for a very special culinary tradition: catching and preparing lampreys (Nēģi). Every year in August, the town celebrates the Lamprey Festival, where visitors can taste the delicacies grilled over alder wood. Fishing has a centuries-old tradition here that still shapes the town's identity today. The nature around Carnikava is part of the Piejūra Nature Park. Especially worth seeing is the point where the Gauja flows into the Baltic Sea, a dynamic ecosystem with shifting dunes and rare bird species. A well-developed wooden promenade leads through the dunes directly to the wide sandy beach, which is less crowded than in more famous neighboring towns. For active travelers, the region features excellent conditions for cycling and canoe trips on the Gauja. In Carnikava, travelers find peace and an authentic Latvian atmosphere. There are local markets selling craft products alongside fish. The connection to Riga is excellent via the railway line, with the journey taking about 40 minutes. The best time to visit is late summer to fully enjoy the culinary heritage and the warm days at the river mouth.
