Sohar on the Al Batinah coast was one of the richest port cities on the Indian Ocean in the 9th and 10th centuries and is considered the legendary hometown of Sinbad the Sailor. Today, about 200,000 people live in the city, which was developed by Sultan Qaboos from the 1990s into a major industrial hub of the Sultanate of Oman. The deep-sea Sohar Port, opened in 2002, is home to aluminum, steel, and petrochemical industrial facilities, as well as a free trade zone. The whitewashed Sohar Fort from the 13th century now houses a museum documenting the city's maritime past. Sohar is about 230 kilometers from Muscat and 120 kilometers from the border with the United Arab Emirates via the coastal highway.
