Shinas is the northernmost wilayat of the North Al Batinah province and borders directly on the United Arab Emirates. The city of about 75,000 inhabitants is located about 280 kilometers northwest of Muscat on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. Shinas has one of Oman's most important mangrove forests (Khor Liwa and Khor Shinas), which have been designated as a protected area since 2008 and are a nesting place for numerous migratory birds. The 19th-century Shinas Fort has been restored and now houses a small museum on the history of the region. The port of Shinas, with ferry connections to Iran (Bandar-e Lengeh), is an important hub in the trade of the Sultanate of Oman. Economically, fishing, agriculture (dates, limes), and cross-border trade with the Emirates dominate.
