Saham is a wilayat in the North Al Batinah province with about 120,000 inhabitants, located about 200 kilometers northwest of Muscat on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. The city has Saham Fort, from the late 18th century, built under Sultan Said bin Sultan. Said bin Sultan, one of the most important rulers of the Sultanate of Oman, reigned from 1804 to 1856 and temporarily moved the capital to Zanzibar in 1832. Saham is an important fishing and agricultural city: freezing plants process the catch of the local fishing fleet. The fertile coastal plain is used with Aflaj irrigation for the cultivation of limes, dates, and vegetables. The long sandy beach and the historic marine promenade also make Saham a destination for day-trippers from Sohar and Muscat.
