💡 Tips

  • Climbing Golem Korab (the peak) is best done in September during the organized international climb to avoid needing border police permits.
  • If hiking outside the annual event, you must register with the border police in the village of Strezimir beforehand.
  • The dirt road to the Strezimir watchtower (the usual starting point) requires a 4x4 or a sturdy high-clearance vehicle.
  • Bring all your food and water from Mavrovo or Debar; there are no facilities or shops on the mountain.
  • Start your hike at dawn; afternoon thunderstorms are common in the high alpine areas during summer.

Mount Korab is the highest peak in both North Macedonia and Albania, standing at a formidable 2,764 meters. Located within Mavrovo National Park, it forms the natural border between the two nations. The terrain is dramatically alpine, characterized by sharp limestone ridges, deep canyons, and vast high-altitude meadows. One of its most impressive features is the Korab Waterfall, which drops over 130 meters, making it one of the tallest in the Balkans during the spring snowmelt. Every year on September 8th, thousands of people participate in a traditional mass climb to the summit to mark North Macedonia's Independence Day. Outside of this event, Korab is a quiet destination for serious hikers seeking solitude and raw mountain wilderness. The trek to the top is long but rewarding, typically starting from the Strezimir border post. The area is home to traditional mountain shepherds and rich wildlife, including golden eagles and Balkan chamois. Given its border location, the mountain was once restricted, but today it is open to all who seek its majestic views. The best window for climbing is between July and September, when the high passes are finally clear of snow and the alpine flowers are in full bloom.
