Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Monastery of Saint Jovan Bigorski is one of North Macedonia's most significant spiritual and cultural centers, located in the pretty Radika river valley within the Mavrovo National Park. It was founded in 1020 by Archbishop Jovan of Debar after he discovered an icon of Saint John the Baptist in the river. The monastery is world-renowned for its extraordinary 19th-century iconostasis, painstakingly carved from walnut wood by master Petre Filipovski Garkata and his team over several years. These carvings depict hundreds of biblical scenes and floral motifs with a precision that is unmatched in the Balkans. The architecture of the complex follows the traditional Macedonian style, featuring multi-story residential buildings and fortified stone walls. Despite suffering several destructions and fires, most recently in 2009, the monastery has always been meticulously restored to its original form. It houses an active monastic community known for its hospitality and the preservation of Byzantine chanting traditions. The monastery also possesses precious relics, including parts of the hand of Saint John the Baptist. Every year, tens of thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit this holy site to admire the spiritual atmosphere and artistic treasures.
