Genemuiden is a historic industrial town in the Zwartewaterland municipality within the province of Overijssel. It is strategically located at the mouth of the river Zwarte Water where it meets the Zwarte Meer (formerly part of the Zuiderzee). Since the Middle Ages, the town has been known for its specialization in floor coverings; originally, rush mats were crafted from locally grown aquatic plants. In the 20th century, Genemuiden evolved into the premier center for the Dutch carpet industry and is now a global market leader in artificial grass production. Despite its industrial focus, the town has preserved a welcoming core that recalls its long history, dating back to the granting of city rights in 1275. The maritime atmosphere is enhanced by the marina and proximity to the nature reserves of the IJssel Delta. Deeply rooted Protestant traditions continue to shape the social life and culture of the town, which is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and strong social cohesion.
