Abaiang is a destination for travelers seeking true isolation and authenticity. The atoll consists of numerous islets surrounding a vast, shimmering lagoon. Visitors come here to experience the slow-paced life in villages like Koinawa, where time seems to stand still. The main landmark is the historic St. Joseph Catholic Church, which provides a striking contrast to the tropical surroundings with its colorful stained glass windows. Nature is the main protagonist here: the lagoon invites snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, while the outer reefs are rich in marine life. Local gastronomy is based almost exclusively on fresh fish, coconuts, and pandanus fruit. A special experience is participating in a Te Bero ceremony, the islanders' traditional welcome greeting. Access is usually by small plane or boat from the capital, Tarawa. The best time to visit is between December and February, when the weather is most stable.
