Weather…

Nan Madol, frequently called the 'Venice of the Pacific,' is a monumental ruined city located off the eastern shore of Pohnpei. This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of nearly 100 artificial islets built on top of a coral reef, interconnected by a sophisticated network of tidal canals. Constructed between 1200 and 1500 AD, it served as the ceremonial and political seat of the Saudeleur dynasty. The scale of the architecture is dramatic; massive basalt columns, naturally formed into hexagonal shapes, were stacked horizontally like logs to create walls, platforms, and tombs without the use of mortar. Some of these stones weigh up to 50 tons, and how they were transported from distant quarries and positioned in the lagoon remains a subject of great debate. The most impressive structure, Nandauwas, features royal burial chambers protected by high basalt walls. Today, the ruins offer a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the highly organized and powerful maritime society that once ruled the island.
