Best season
The breeding season of Micronesian swiftlets is mainly from March to August, when thousands of birds fill the cave. In the remaining months, the population is smaller but birds are still present.
Best time of day
The morning between 6 and 8 is convenient for watching the birds fly out of the cave. Late afternoon they return - offering good backlight photo opportunities.
Etiquette
Entering the cave is not allowed to avoid disturbing the breeding colony - observation is from the entrance only. Flashlights are forbidden as they blind the birds; use natural light.
What to bring
Binoculars are very helpful for spotting birds in flight and on the cave ceiling. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the path to the cave goes over uneven terrain.
Getting there
The trail to Wiya Bird Cave starts from Kosrae's coastal road and is only accessible on foot - about a 20-minute hike. A local guide is recommended as the path is not always well marked.
What to expect
Birds do not fly out at regular intervals - there can be quiet periods followed by sudden mass departures. Stand still and wait near the cave entrance.
