Bravo Crater (Marshall Islands)

Weather…

Bravo Crater is a stark and haunting geographical scar located on the northwestern corner of Bikini Atoll. It was formed on March 1, 1954, by the detonation of Castle Bravo, the most powerful thermonuclear device ever tested by the United States. The explosion yielded 15 megatons, two and a half times more than predicted, resulting in the instantaneous vaporization of three coral islands and a massive section of the reef. The resulting crater measures roughly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) in diameter and reaches a depth of 75 meters (250 feet). The fallout from the blast was far more widespread than anticipated, contaminating nearby inhabited atolls such as Rongelap and Utirik, which led to a global outcry and significant changes in nuclear testing protocols. Today, the crater is part of the Bikini Atoll UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized as a profound symbol of the nuclear age. From the air, it remains clearly visible as a deep indigo circle against the lively turquoise waters of the lagoon.
