Panemunė Castle (Lithuania)

Weather…

Panemunė Castle rises picturesquely above the Nemunas River valley, standing as one of the country's most beautiful Renaissance structures. Its construction was initiated in 1604 by János Eperyes, a wealthy nobleman of Hungarian descent, who envisioned it as a fortified country estate. Unlike many other Lithuanian castles, it never served as a military border fortress against the Teutonic Knights, but rather as an elegant feudal residence that harmoniously blends Gothic and Renaissance elements. The characteristic towers and the expansive English landscape park invite visitors to explore the grounds. Following numerous changes of ownership and historical destruction, the estate has been undergoing careful restoration for decades. Today, the castle houses a hotel and restaurant, alongside an exhibition branch of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, bringing spirited cultural life back to the ancient walls.
