Ukmergė is situated on the banks of the Šventoji River in central Lithuania and is one of the oldest cities in the country. The first documentary mention dates back to 1225, underlining the settlement's deep historical roots. The cityscape is dominated by the Ukmergė hillfort, where a strategically important wooden fortress once stood. The surroundings are rich in architectural treasures, including the classicist Vaitkuškis manor and the nearby Siesikai castle from the Renaissance period. In the 19th century, Ukmergė developed into a significant regional trade center and was the scene of fierce fighting during the uprisings against the Russian Empire. The city has preserved its historical core with numerous pre-war stone buildings. Today, the region is known for its bustling cultural scene and efforts to preserve the Jewish heritage that defined the community before World War II.
