Ukmergė is one of the oldest settlements in Lithuania, with its first historical mention dating back to 1225. Situated at the confluence of the Šventoji and Vilkmergė rivers, the town served as a vital strategic defense point during the Middle Ages, centered around the historic Ukmergė Mound. This mound once held a formidable wooden fortress that played a significant role in the 14th-century conflicts against the Teutonic Order. The urban landscape of the town is characterized by distinctive late 19th-century red brick commercial architecture, which arose following several major fires that reshaped the city center. The Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul stands as a key architectural monument, showcasing a blend of neoclassical and baroque influences. Today, Ukmergė functions as a prominent industrial and administrative hub within the Vilnius County, while actively preserving its rich historical identity and the cultural heritage of the Aukštaitija ethnographic region.
