Marijampolė is the seventh largest city in Lithuania and serves as the administrative capital of Marijampolė County and the cultural center of the Suvalkija (Sūduva) region. Situated in the southwestern part of the country on the banks of the Šešupė River, the city's history began in the early 18th century as a settlement called Pašešupis. Under the patronage of the Sapieha noble family and the Marian Fathers, the town grew and was granted city rights in 1792 by King Stanisław August Poniatowski. During the 19th century, Marijampolė emerged as a vital educational hub, with its Rygiškių Jonas Gymnasium educating many prominent figures of the Lithuanian national awakening. In the Soviet era, the city was briefly renamed Kapsukas, before restoring its historical name in 1989. Today, Marijampolė is a major transport junction on the Via Baltica highway and a significant center for the food processing and automotive trade industries.
