Alytus, the historical capital of the Dzūkija region in southern Lithuania, is situated on a prominent loop of the Nemunas River. The city is characterized by its green surroundings and the deep ravines that crisscross the urban area. A modern landmark is the White Rose Bridge, the highest pedestrian and cyclist bridge in Lithuania, built on the foundations of an old 19th-century railway bridge. Alytus has a long military history dating back to the 14th century, when a strategic defense fortress against the Teutonic Order stood here. The surroundings offer significant natural and historical monuments with the Vidzgiris forest and the Alytus hillfort. Despite heavy destruction in both World Wars, the city has developed into a dynamic industrial and cultural center, known for its annual city festival and sculpture parks. The region is also considered a gateway to the photogenic landscapes of the southern Nemunas valley.
