Panevėžys is the fifth largest city in Lithuania, acting as the central hub of the Aukštaitija region. Founded in 1503 by Grand Duke Alexander Jagiellon, the city is beautifully situated along the banks of the Nevėžis River. With a population of around 85,000, Panevėžys developed into one of the country's most vital industrial centers during the 20th century. The city is renowned nationwide for its Drama Theatre, founded by Juozas Miltinis, which turned Panevėžys into a stronghold of theatrical arts. The old riverbed, known as Senvagė, has been transformed into a scenic recreational park right in the city center. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art Cido Arena frequently hosts international indoor cycling and basketball events.
